The Neuroscience (NEUR) major is a Limited Enrollment Program (LEP), however it is NOT competitive. Current University of Maryland (UMD) students who would like to declare NEUR as a major can complete the following gateway requirements before applying and be admitted:

  • MATH135 or MATH 140 with a grade of C- or higher
  • BSCI170 and BSCI171 with grades of C- or higher
  • BSCI160 and BSCI161 with grades of C- or higher
  • CHEM131 and CHEM132 with grades of C- or higher
  • CHEM231 and CHEM232 with grades of C- or higher
  • A minimum grade point average of a 2.7 in all college level coursework is required

Current UMD students who would like to declare a second major or degree in NEUR must meet the above gateway criteria.

Please note: due to curriculum overlap, students will not be allowed to earn a double major or degree in the following:

  • Neuroscience and Psychology
  • Neuroscience and General Biology
  • Neuroscience and any of the Biological Sciences specializations

After successfully completing the above gateway criteria, students declaring NEUR as a major will undergo the following process:

  1. Submit your LEP application by the appropriate deadline for the NEUR major
  2. After receiving your decision notification:
    1. Await major change instructions from the College of Computer, Mathematics, and Natural Sciences
    2. Complete the Neuroscience Major Change modules on ELMS-Canvas
    3. Complete your graduation plan
    4. Meet with your assigned Neuroscience academic advisor
