To apply to the Neuroscience Honors Program, students must complete NEUR Honors Program Application Form and submit the application to the NEUR honors director, Dr. Nikolas Francis, at neurhonors [at] umd.edu.
Applications must be submitted during the fall, winter, or spring semester to enroll in the following semester. Applications will not be accepted during summer break.
Eligibility Requirements:
- Must be in the Neuroscience Major
- Must have (and maintain) an overall GPA of at least 3.25 to be accepted (and remain) in the program
- Must have completed NEUR200: Introduction to Neuroscience before junior year
- Must be able to complete these 4 sequential semesters in the order listed below to remain in the honors program:

- Thesis introduction (1st semester)
- Thesis proposal (2nd semester)
- Thesis research (3rd semester)
- Thesis defense (4th semester)

- Must enroll for Honors Research Credit (NEUR379H/479H) AND NEUR398H each fall and spring semester in the program
- NEUR398H cannot be registered for credit over the winter or summer breaks
- A minimum of 9 credits must be obtained while in the program
- Register for 2-4 NEUR379H/479H credits each semester
- Previously earned non-honors research credits (e.g. NEUR379/479) do not count toward the 9 required honors research credits
- Credits earned over the winter or summer breaks do not count toward the 9 required research credits
- Must obtain a PI’s sponsorship willing to advise honors thesis research before admission to the program (an on-campus co-mentor is required for off-campus research)
